A Fresh Take on a 1910 Gem: Creating a Welcoming Gathering Space

1910 Historic Home Renovation - Living room with Fireplace focal point

There’s something so special about breathing new life into an older home, and this 1910 historic home renovation is no exception. Over the years, previous owners had introduced modern touches to the property, but our goal this time around was more focused and heartfelt.

We wanted to create a room designated for family gatherings and entertaining—affectionately dubbed the “Christmas Tree Room.” A place where adults can mingle and relax, yet still stand up to the everyday adventures of four energetic kiddos.

Embracing Light and History

As you step inside this home, this living space is one of the first spaces you see. With large windows at both the front and back, the natural light pours in, making it feel bright and airy all day long.

We kept the palette soft and subtle, allowing the lush greenery outside to be the star of the show. Hints of delicate color prevent the room from feeling stark, while still keeping the focus on the beautiful surroundings.

A Classic Focal Point

Central to the design was restoring the fireplace as the room’s focal point. Warm and inviting, it anchors the space and sets the perfect stage for gatherings—especially when the holidays roll around and the Christmas tree takes center stage.

We also played with timeless patterns and textures throughout, from a plaster-finished game table and linen-wrapped console to velvety accent pillows and a caramel-toned leatherette ottoman. Each piece contributes to a sense of casual elegance that feels both current and enduring.

A Nod to the Past

We gave the old built-in bookcases a new lease on life by color-washing them in one of our favorite Farrow & Ball hues.

Marble accents and classic cremone bolts paired with glass doors offer a more formal touch, bridging old-world charm and modern style.

Two cherished family heirlooms—a beautiful black bench beneath the gallery wall and an oversized mirror above the console—infuse personal history into the design. This mix of old and new ensures the room will age gracefully and remain meaningful for years to come.

Subtle Sophistication

Lighting plays a vital role in this space. Layered lighting through wall sconces, picture lights, and lamps allows the atmosphere to shift as day turns to night.

Whether enjoying an afternoon chat or unwinding with a glass of wine by the fire, the lighting can be adjusted to suit the moment. In the evenings, the glow of layered fixtures complements the warmth of the fireplace, making this gathering room even more inviting.

We introduced applied molding to the walls, giving the space understated elegance and depth. This subtle architectural detail helps tie the design together, elevating the room without overwhelming it. It’s the perfect finishing touch—just enough to remind you of the home’s rich heritage, while still feeling fresh and welcoming for a modern family.

A Room to Gather, Celebrate, and Enjoy

This project embodies what we love most about interior design: connecting a home’s history with a family’s present-day needs.

By restoring focal points, embracing timeless textures, and layering meaningful heirlooms, we’ve created a space that brings everyone together. A room that will evolve as the children grow, host countless celebrations and always feel like the heart of this century-old gem.
