What little boy wouldn’t be excited to go all out in their bedroom if given carte blanche?
After patiently waiting two years for his big boy room, this new big brother knew exactly what he wanted: a pirate room. Not just any old pirate room, but one with a ladder, steps to his bed, and even a parrot in a perch!
He played the game well. I told him to dream big and give me his wishlist. He understood the assignment. Our job was now to dissect what he wanted and execute it in a way that could transition with him over time, and a room his mom would also enjoy and not have to redecorate in six months when he decides he prefers Paw Patrol!
Designing a Room That Grows with Him
As we do in all kid spaces, we added a desk so he could be creative without little brothers bugging him. A place where he could color and draw and also grow into—a place to do homework.
Boxes and bins were also added so his mom could tuck away any sentimental items she’s holding onto, like those little works of art and handprints from preschool days! And, of course, more baskets and boxes so all those little rocks and “crystals” would have a contained home. And let’s not forget a bulletin board to showcase the latest creation.
Little Touches, Big Impact
Little touches went a long way and always do with little clients. The little steps to the bed were the highlight and made him feel heard.
While we went simple with hints of a pirate theme, we translated what he said into a space that was tasteful, timeless, and still magical. He was thrilled, and so was his mama.
This space meant so much more than just fresh décor to this family. It was a turning of the page from only child to big brother of twins—siblings they all waited and wanted for a long time! His space signaled an end of an era and a start to so many new adventures with him captaining the ship of big brotherhood.
A|O Design Notes:
Layers of Lighting: As with any other space we design, we will always layer lighting to achieve that complete and elevated look. We added little lamps for storytelling, creating cozy nooks for bedtime stories.
Storage is key: Every parent knows that there is never enough storage when kids are present. From keepsakes and collections to just everyday items, there are always more things than we have room for. We ensured that this big boy room has a place for everything now, and the things that are definitely coming soon!
A big boy bed and layers of luxury: This is truly the space where this little boy transitioned from nursery to his big boy's room. With the full-sized bedroom furniture, this little one will be able to grow into his bed and his mom won’t have to keep changing it as he grows up. We finished the space with layers of bedding that add extra comfort, interest, and calm to the space. This little guy definitely has cozy sleeps!
Hints of a Theme: We added the ship’s wheel, ladder, and wall art to get the imagination going and add that touch of whimsy all kids desire. But instead of going all out on a theme that can quickly go out of style with your little ones, we introduced elements that can be swapped out when the time is right.
Creating a room like this is all about attention to detail and understanding the unique needs and passions of our clients. It’s a space where every moment is cherished, and every detail contributes to a warm, inviting atmosphere.
We hope this glimpse into our latest project inspires you to create a dream room for your little one, filled with little moments that make life truly special.
