So, you’re Thinking About Hiring a Designer for your next renovation or decorating project? Let’s Chat.

If you've ever found yourself stuck between pinning dream kitchens and wondering how anyone actually pulls it all off, you're not alone. We hear it all the time—“I know what I like, but I don’t know how to bring it together.” Or, “I’ve never worked with a designer before—how does it work?”

Hiring a full-service interior design team can feel like a big leap, and we totally get it. That’s why we’ve pulled together a few of the questions that tend to pop up early in the process—along with some honest answers about how we work, who we work best with, and why our process is designed to make your life easier (not more overwhelming).

First things first… what makes a great A|O Interiors client?

This might sound funny, but we’re not the right fit for everyone—and that’s a good thing.

Just like every client is unique, so is every designer. A great working relationship depends on more than just good taste—it comes down to shared values, aligned expectations, and mutual trust. Sometimes it’s a mismatch in aesthetic, communication style, or simply the kind of service offered. And that’s perfectly okay.

At A|O Interiors, we specialize in full-service, turn-key design projects from concept through completion—fluffing the final pillow is just as important to us as drawing the first floor plan. While we do offer consulting hours for select needs, our sweet spot is managing every detail so our clients don’t have to.

So, who do we work best with? Clients who are trusting, open to the process, and happy to hand over the reins to a team that knows how to navigate the complexities of a design project. They usually have a strong sense of what they love, but they don’t want to be involved in every single decision. They value thoughtful design, a collaborative approach, and a beautifully finished space that feels both personal and polished.

And while we don’t expect anyone to make snap decisions, a little decisiveness goes a long way. It helps us keep the project moving forward and stay on track with both budget and timeline.

Do you work with your own contractors?

Yes, absolutely—and here’s why.

Over the years, we’ve built strong relationships with a curated group of tried-and-true contractors who are collaborative, detail-focused, and incredibly reliable. They’re used to being brought in early to align on scope, investment, and timelines—before the design work begins, which allows us to confidently create within real, accurate numbers.

Working with contractors we know (and who know how we work) is one of the reasons our projects run smoothly from start to finish.

If you already have a contractor in place, we can collaborate, but it’s important to note that our pricing may differ. Outside contractors may not be familiar with our process or workflows, which often means more coordination, unexpected variables, and a different level of involvement on our end.

Our sweet spot? When we can match the right contractor to the project from day one. It’s collaborative, efficient, and, honestly, just more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Do clients order everything on their own?

Short answer: We handle all the ordering—and no, it’s not just about picking out furniture.

Working with us means you get access to our trusted trade vendors, preferred suppliers, and a dedicated behind-the-scenes team that ensures everything arrives as it should. If something gets damaged, we’re on it. If a piece is delayed, we’ll keep you informed and adjust timelines accordingly.

This isn’t about control—it’s about quality, accountability, and taking the stress off your plate. When you hire us, you’re not just getting beautiful design—you’re getting a white-glove experience backed by a full support system.

What is a typical design timeline?

While every project is a little different, here’s a general idea of what to expect:

  • Design Phase: From kickoff to presentation, the design process typically takes about 8-12 weeks, depending on the size and scope of the project.

  • Procurement & Installation: Once the design is approved, the timeline depends on the project scope, material availability, and contractor schedules.

We always build in some breathing room and communicate proactively along the way—no radio silence here.

Our goal is to keep things moving steadily, without rushing the creative process. After all, great design takes time, and it’s always worth the wait.

Do you have minimum budgets or design fees?

We do. We offer room-based furnishing minimums and project-based design fees, both of which vary depending on the scope of work. These minimums help ensure we can deliver the full-service experience we're known for—because done is always better than just started.

We're transparent about our pricing from the very beginning. Once a client reaches out, we share our Investment Guide, which outlines our design fees and typical furnishing budgets in detail.

Whenever possible, we encourage clients to tackle multiple rooms—or even entire floors—at once. This approach leads to better results in terms of design cohesion, efficiency, and overall client experience.

Do you handle the finishing touches and styling?

Absolutely. No project is complete without the final layer—the one that pulls everything together and makes your space feel like home.

Styling is a core part of our phased process: Project Kick off, Design Planning, Transformation Journey, Finishing Touches. From fluffing the last pillow to arranging books on the shelves, ensuring there are enough jars for the spices in your new pantry, and organizing cabinetry so it’s both beautiful and functional—we take care of it all. Every detail is considered, down to the candles on your coffee table or the perfect throw at the foot of the bed.

It’s this finishing touch that transforms a space from beautiful to truly livable—so you can walk in and simply start enjoying it.

How is the budget determined?

It all starts with a deep dive into your vision. We’ll review inspiration, talk numbers, and collaborate with contractors and vendors early in the process to build a realistic investment range. Because we work with trusted trades and suppliers, our budgets are grounded in true, real-world costs—not ballpark estimates.

Before we finalize the design, we hold a Layout & Budget Review to ensure we’re aligned on scope and priorities. Then, during the final presentation, we deliver a comprehensive project budget that reflects exactly what it will take to bring your space to life.

Do you take clients shopping with you?

Not in the traditional sense.

Our clients are often busy professionals who come to us specifically because they don’t want to spend their weekends wandering showrooms or making endless decisions. They trust us to do the heavy lifting and deliver a seamless, full-service experience.

That said, when it’s helpful, we may schedule visits together to cabinetry, tile, or plumbing showrooms for inspiration and exploration. These visits are focused and curated—never overwhelming. Final selections are always presented as a cohesive design, so you can clearly visualize how everything works together without the stress of sourcing it all yourself.

Will you present multiple design options?

No—and this is intentional and what makes us unique.

Our role is to present the best possible design solution tailored to your space, needs, and investment. Every element is thoughtfully considered, and our presentation is designed to help you clearly visualize the completed space—down to the last detail.

This approach eliminates decision fatigue, prevents second-guessing, and allows you to enjoy the process. We design with purpose from the very beginning, so by the time reveal day arrives, all that’s left for you to do is fall in love with your home.

What if I want to make changes to the design?

Of course! You absolutely have a right to share your opinions and will always have the opportunity to review and approve the design before anything moves forward.

Our process includes one round of revisions to ensure that you are satisfied with your unique design. These edits are intended to fine-tune the design, not rework the overall concept. With clear communication and focused feedback, we’re able to make thoughtful adjustments while keeping the project aligned with your goals, timeline, and investment.

Comment below and let us know if you have any other questions we can answer for you!

We know starting a design project is a big step, but it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. If you’re ready for a guided, collaborative process (and a home that finally feels like it reflects you), we’d love to hear from you.
